Visited Winter 2025
Origano in Leith has been around for a long time and is often mentioned as one of the best pizza spots in Edinburgh. We had not been in years so I wanted to see if it still held up.
The space is medium sized with a calm and simple interior. You can see the pizzas being made and the oven is on display. Service was very good. Attentive and quick.
The dough was strong. Light and well made. They offer 11 inch, 14 inch and 16 inch sizes which is a good option to have.
We tried two pizzas and one sharing platter.
I had the Calabrese with mascarpone, spicy sausage, garlic, sun-blushed tomatoes and basil. It had a good base but the toppings lacked flavour and seasoning.
Brie had the Oregano with tomato, mozzarella, onion, mushroom, red pepper, black olives, sun-blushed tomatoes, garlic and parsley. It looked good but the flavour did not match. With that many toppings it should have had more impact but it was quite flat. She did not finish it.
Overall the dough and service were the best parts. The ingredients and seasoning let it down. The sharing platter however was delicious, with a good selection of meats, cheeses and antipasti. We were almost disappointed to find that the star of the show was not the pizza.
I would not say it is one of the best pizzas in Leith based on this visit. It could be better on another day but there are stronger options nearby.
Overall impressions:
Good dough and strong service, but the toppings and seasoning did not deliver. It looks the part and the base is solid, but the flavour just is not there. On this visit it did not live up to its reputation.
Would we go again:
Probably not in a hurry. There are better options in the area, although it might be worth revisiting in the future to see if this was just an off day.
