It had been several years since our last visit to Mother India, which left us asking one question: why did we wait so long to return?

We are giving the game away early. We thoroughly enjoyed our midweek trip. Here’s why.

Atmosphere and Service

Mother India delivers exactly what you want from an Indian restaurant in Glasgow. The building showcases classic period features, with high ceilings and ornate detailing. A gold-toned ceiling and warm wooden panelling create a rich setting, while Rennie Mackintosh chairs complete the room.

Service was exceptional. We have recently shifted to earlier dining times and often benefit from quieter rooms, but this was something else. The pacing was precise, almost military, yet calm and confident. Every detail was handled without fuss. Brie went as far as to say it was the best service she has experienced in Glasgow in years. We know consistency can vary, but on this visit it was faultless.

The Food

Tried not to order poppadoms. We failed. The accompanying dips were excellent and we finished the whole lot.

To start, we chose the Ginger and Green Chilli Fish Pakora. It had been a while since either of us had ordered fish pakora, and Basil made the call. The haddock, marinated in a ginger chilli purée, was well executed. That said, it leaned close to a spiced fried fish. Enjoyable, but not something we would rush to order again.

For mains, we kept things simple, exactly what we were in the mood for. We opted for a vegetarian plate with spinach paneer and broccoli. This was outstanding. The paneer was soft, rich, and full of flavour. We always order paneer when it fits the menu, but this was on another level.

We also chose the butter chicken, cooked with green cardamom, cloves, and finished with dried fruit and walnuts. The sauce was creamy, balanced, and deeply comforting. It is a classic done very well.

For dessert, we had gulab jamun ice cream, which was excellent, and a mango lassi that was equally good.

Final Thoughts

Mother India reminded us why it has such a strong reputation. It balances atmosphere, service, and food with confidence and consistency.

Would we go again? Yes, in a heartbeat.

Three things you need to know

  1. The service is among the best in Glasgow when it is on form.
  2. The paneer dishes are not to be missed.
  3. Book early or dine early for the best experience.
